So I’ve been dealing with this for going on several months now. I have specifically 2 gonis that when I first got them the first few months they were perfect, long extended tentacles and happy. Last few months the tentacles are much shorter. Still out, not retracted by any means but not extended as they use to be. I have a few theories. 1 my clownfish pair trying to host and the constant rubbing against and kicking up sand irritates it and causes this. 2 a decrease in trace elements. I use to do icp test but then had a mini tank crash, moved, upgraded tanks, so haven’t yet done them again, although water is new maybe they deplete specific elements faster than I replenish. Including manganese. Currently the clownfish aren’t hosting and rubbing as much as before but time will tell. Any theories? I’ll list old pic and new pics.
Parameters too incase anyone thinks my nutrients are to blame.
Alk 8
Calcium 430
Mag 1400
Nitrate 5
Phos .06

Its just a picture, but in the pic the flow looks pretty strong. If the flow is too hard the polyps will retract a little to protect itself. Try to fix the flow so the polyps are gently swaying from side to side. IMO

They are in a little moderate to higher flow but I fine they generally like that. I moved them to a little bit less flow. In my old tank they were in moderate to higher flow and doing fine so we’ll see if they like this now

Could be a heavy metal issue as well but can't be sure without completing that ICP. My ORA goni will get hit with the highest flow in my tank and loves it, so they will take a beating and get insane extension.

It’s just the gonis so I’m not entirely sure. Also this tank is new so 100% need water so I wouldn’t see an issue with that yet. Everything else is fine. I believed it was the clowns just constantly irritating it but they haven’t much in last week. Maybe they just need more time to recover? Idk

I’ve recently started adding manganese and iron. But ironically the best my Gonis ever looked was using tap water(not necessarily recommended obviously) and a 2 part and magnesium. But I’ve had to change my practices since moving to different place.

Do you believe clowns trying to host in them and kicking up sand a lot can irritate them enough to not be extended as much?

Yes, but it’s not every Goni reacting the same way. I had Gonis that hated the treatment the clowns gave and equal number that didn’t care. Generally the larger the Goni the less they cared. Here’s pic from the largest Goni I ever had. As you can see it’s fine with clownie

Gorgeous goni. Mine I would say are between large frags and mini colonies. But when the clown would rub against it I can see it retracting in polyps, so I definitely don’t think it likes it. I’ll see how it is if the clowns continue to leave it more alone now and then reevaluate
