Hi Guys! I’m about 1.5 years into my reef tank journey and I finally feel like I got a hang on things. I want to try a Gonipora!!!!!

Any tips or things I should watch out for ? I heard they are hard to take care of but I’m up for the challenge!!

Calcium 459
Alk 9.1
Phosphate 0.07
Nitrate undetectable (will start feeding more and dosing a bit of nitrates but nothing crazy)
Po4 0.07
Magnesium 1660
Salinity 35

Also I do weekly water changes

I dont know if Im just lucky or if they aren't as difficult as they used to be. I haven't had any issues and havent done anything special except for weekly water changes. Mine seem to like higher flow and a good amount of light, I was able to grow a small frag to the size of a golf ball in 6 months or so.

+1 on the manganese. Also, spot feed reef roids and/or goniopower 2-3 times a week. Give them a good amount of flow. Gonis love flow despite what many distributors say. I keep mine where I acclimate new acros to give you an idea of how much flow mine get.

Manganese , keep mag up as well, I keep mine close to 1400. Some will say keep in lower par, but I’ve had the in par over 200. And yeah good irregular flow. I have to admit I don’t spot feed Goniopower but I do broadcast feed that and freeze dried rotifer powder a few times a week.

Get your nitrates between 10 and 15 parts per million. One of my goniopora is my canary in a coal mine, it shows me when my nitrates dip below 10 ppm
That’s the plan my guy!!! Keep Nitrate at about 10!! I’m dosing Neo nitro a small amount and feeding more! Slow and steady!

You think my weekly water changes will help?

I’m just getting this new tank off the ground but I had a 90 that had some good sized ones. Unhappy had to sell due to moving. Here’s a video of the Gonis and Alves I had

Imo, most important is getting captive grown. I’m very skeptical about some mysterious parameters that become vital to their success. I’ve had great success with spot feeding and maintaining parameters close to ocean levels.

Maybe extend them out to every two weeks if you're having a problem keeping nitrates up.

lol and I don’t feed mine, have them in particularly high light or flow, or dose manganese so go figure🤷‍♂️

I wouldn’t change a ton of what you are doing if you are currently having success. Snag one and drop it in and see how it does. Can always start working through everyone’s recommendations if it doesn’t acclimate well

I know this isnt helpfull at all, but i do absolutely nothing special for my gonis. When i got them i didnt know they needed anything special or were considered difficult by some. My wife said “oo pretty” so she got that and i got another acro. Then i won some bernardipora (shorter tentacle goni) at auction and did same thing. They have been thriving thus far. I only feed ever so often and its always broadcast feed, just when i feel like it. Could be every few days of every few weeks. Sure gonis like it but idk if they need it. I also agree with others that Gonis like high Mg and Mn. But dont go dosing extra Mn until your sure you actually need to. I highly recommend an ICP test first. Imo excessive amounts can be more dangerous than non detectable. Heres my latest ICP test for reference to parameters:
