Good Morning!

At our old house we had traveling chickens. They would lay eggs in our ground cover. They came from our neighbors barn.

I love chickens. Very cool pets.
Unfortunately, we can’t let ours out to free range unless we are out there watching them. Our neighbors have a bunch of aggressive dogs that they let roam the neighborhood and they chase the hens.

How is Rudy doing today?

He is not used to being crated so he is making sounds of great despair. We are cleaning his surgical drain several times a day which makes him grumble a lot. So far so good.

Those were not our chickens. They just visited and left eggs for us. Then Jeanna would lead them home and put them back in the barn. We used to get cows and goats in our yard also. The first time you see a large cow squeeze through a barbed wire fence it is amazing.

I think we’re going to stay below freezing all day tomorrow also. I’d like to use a heat lamp for the girls but the hen house is only powered by a 100’ extension cord plugged into a GFI on the outside of the house. Eventually, I’ll get real power out to the barn and hen house. We only run LED lights in the hen house and in the Summer, we run a couple of box fans for them. The heat lamp worries me. Fire????
We run a 50' cord to the coop and with 7 hens, I have a clamp lamp out there with a 75wt reptile day lamp
Its currently 64 degrees in their coop and our outside temp is wind chill 2 degrees and their running around in their (we can see their shadows as coop is wrapped in plastic.
yet, yesterday was 56 degrees.
The whole lamp setup came to $22 and it is on a timer going on at dark and off at 5:15a
If tomorrow is continued cold, I am going to leave lamp on all day and hens will have to stay in coop and i'll run them food and water in Am and PM but they'll be cozy

I’m not much of an electrician. Do you think it’s safe to run a heat lamp off of a 100’ cord? It’s an outdoor cord but I think it’s 12ga.

Same cord gage I have and I have no concerns especially with it in a cold setting ( well it too is warm in the coop.) We also have a roof on the run, so there is no snow or rain to ruin the day for the hens. 7-8 eggs daily even with the cold weather.

if there's a fire I'll run back and add some special herbs and spices.

They had several other VERY aggressive dogs. One killed a cat on our land the day before Thanksgiving. They can’t seem to find it anywhere. It’s been missing since the day after Thanksgiving. Nuf said!

Good Morning and a Merry Christmas to all of my Reefing Family!
Not much going on in our household this year with the C-19 and I’m sure it’ll be the same for many of you also.
Still dark out but it looks like we got a light dusting of snow. Must have happened after I brought out the second wave of heating discs for the chickens. Brrrrrrr, it was cold at 1:00am. It’s 37* in the coop right now so they get to sleep in.
We had our traditional Chinese take out ( still PC to say that? ) for dinner last night and watched some Christmas shows. Quiet evening!
Hope Y’all have a wonderful Christmas Day today.

Very special Merry Christmas good morning to you all!

Dusting of snow here and currently 23 degrees!

Merry Christmas
We have 6 inches. It's a White Christmas.
We deployed the new cyborg canine snowplow for it's trial run. Needs some work. It plugs up with snow in the cone. It has good traction though and made excellent forward headway and we retrieved it with the flex lead.

Good morning and Merry Christmas to everyone. It’s a little chilly this morning. 0 degrees. We have about 3 feet of snow and a foot of ice on the lakes. Most of the ski and snowmobile trails have been groomed. I’m enjoying my coffee before I take off for work. Stay warm and be safe!
