For those of you who follow the educational news, when compared on an international level the US has been scoring subpar in the maths and sciences. It has been a strong belief of mine that to solve the issue we need to strengthen our foundation by better immersion of our youth in math and science. Well, apparently NASA feels the same way and has enacted an initiative to stimulate the minds of our future with a highly competitive fellowship for people seeking an advanced degree.
Lucky me, I was one of the fortunate few to be selected in the state of MS. I now have the responsibility to go around to the schools to do K-12 outreach for math and science, it is required 20 hours a week with four hours in the classroom. Hopefully removing the nerdy/dorky label applied to kids interested in these subjects and getting more kids to persue careers in the scientific industries. I believe that these efforts will have a trickle down effect and we will notice great improvements with these investments in our future and into many generations to come.
Plus I officially get to call myself a NASA fellow now ;)
