Gravid Acropora

Just wanted to share a picture of a gravid Acropora selago colony we have had for three years, was fragging off of it last week and noticed it was full of eggs!


I'm guessing the supplemental nutrition from our heavy use of suspended coral foods made this colony decide it has enough energy to make some babies!

A well fed Acropora is a happy Acropora ;-)

That is very cool.

Last time I saw eggs on my acros they looked nothing like those. It was a pretty sad day.

So just curious with all the supplemental feeding you guys do, what ranges do you keep for residual NO3/PO4? Do you export particularly hard?

In our SPS systems, targets are 15-20ppm N and .05ppm P, We use Nyos 300 skimmers and use macro like gracilaria and cheato in fuges, also ,while it doesn't export it, kalkwasser can precipitate P, and in some of our systems we are dosing 10 gallons via kalk reactors, definitely see a big difference in P trends when those reactors start becoming exhausted, even before noticing pH trending down or alk falling.

I've heard that (kalk preciping phosphate) before, now that you mention it. But forgot about that. Explains why I have to manage PO4 in my display, but not in my frag system. My DT does not run kalk while my frag gets 4 liters a cycle.

We feed 3x a week, usually a blend of Reef Nutrition oysterfeast, Phytofeast and Rotifeast if Phosphate needs to come up, if Phosphate has been trending up or above target we feed benepets

Do you have seasonal fluctuations of temp or lighting in your tank?? Congrats!!

What a great observation and great work!

What are you using for your light, photoperiod, any seasonal adjustments? Do you use any moonlights? I was really fascinated by the Craggs study, and have contemplated actively trying to replicate, but I think there is too much light pollution where my system sits.

This colony is under Radion G4,pros, we don't make any seasonal changes to photoperiod, No moonlights, the farm is pretty much pitch black during the night, minus the small amount of light pollution via MP/ vortech pump controllers.
Temperature runs 77-78 but during the summer it can kiss 80-81.
