The Gulf Signal Blenny is a small tube blenny native to the tropical western Atlantic and Caribbean. Like other members of the tube blenny family (Chaenopsidae), it spends most of its life peeking from narrow crevices, empty worm tubes, or small holes in live rock, darting out to capture tiny planktonic prey before quickly retreating to safety. Its curious personality, expressive behavior, and compact size make it a fascinating addition to peaceful reef aquariums. A 20-gallon aquarium or larger is suitable for a single specimen, though larger systems provide greater stability. The aquarium should include abundant live rock with small holes, shells, or artificial tubes that can serve as permanent shelters. Maintain stable reef conditions with a temperature of 74–80°F, a pH of 8.1–8.4, specific gravity of 1.023–1.026, and moderate water movement. This species is considered reef-safe, posing no threat to corals or ornamental invertebrates. It is generally peaceful toward other fish but may defend its chosen burrow against other tube blennies or similarly shaped species. Emblemaria hypacanthus is a carnivorous micro-predator that feeds on zooplankton in the wild. In captivity, it should be offered a varied diet of Gamma finely chopped mysis shrimp, enriched baby brine shrimp, copepods, cyclops, and other small frozen or live foods. Many individuals will also learn to accept high-quality micro pellets. Feeding small portions 2–3 times daily helps maintain excellent health and vibrant coloration. With proper care and stable water quality, this species can live 3–5 years and provides endless entertainment through its inquisitive, perching behavior.
