Half my wall hammer died in transpo, can I cut off the base on the dead side?

I got a wall hammer and half died in transport, and now the few inches of dead wall are a reminder of failure and rather ugly.
Can I simply bandsaw the dead half of the wall off or will I just stress the living part more until it dies?
