For the Skimmer, since it's HOB, I guess I could route the overflow line back into the tank, but removing the cup seems only an option it it sits in a sump. I'd rather have the overflow back into the tank anyway actually if that's a good thing, since I don't have it plumbed now it could just fill and overflow onto the floor..

Let's make it simple: Hammers or any euphylia sp. will not survive in a new tank regardless of the parameters. An old tank is a prerequisite but even that is not enough.
(from my experience and others...)

Btw our Hammer was pulled today, did not make it, ugh :/

To add, this is our Wall Frog kicking butt (also euphyllia), went in the tank same day as the Hammer.. It hosts our Clowns :)

Be careful as the clowns might love it to death...

Your Hammer Coral is being fried by the lights. Move it down to the sand and put it into some shade. Make sure it gets fed well with direct feeding. I use newly hatched brine shrimp. I run my nutrients (nitrates and phosphates) at zero and I don’t have a problem with my euphyllia, which you can see in my avatar photo. Good luck.
