I am thinking about getting a hang on back refugium for my 40 gallon AIO. specifically i was looking at this one https://www.marinedepot.com/aquamax...GIyUzHshdfmEGz4r-0rRin2HELvbFIzwaAsXrEALw_wcB

I was wondering if anyone has experience with it and if you would recommend me getting a refugium at all. The main reason am looking at one is 1 to reduce nitrates and 2 for pods. I currently have Caribsea liferock and it seems like it doesn't have enough crevices for pods.

I don't have experience with that HOB refugium, but for $130, I'd rather put that toward a bigger tank with a proper sump.

Your rockwork has PLENTY of spots for pods. They'll be in the rocks, sand, everywhere. You can always add some dry rock rubble to the tank.

Seems expensive and doesn't include the light.

I run that fuge on my 40 gallon AOI. Love it. Fits right, runs well, and grows chaeto/pods like crazy.
Fuges don't grow chaeto and pods. Stable, established aquariums do. I could make a "fuge" out of a glass jar and grow pods and chaeto if everything is good.

For an AIO, some people use the center chamber as a fuge. They pull out the bio-media and put a light in there with some macro, etc. Tunze makes a submersible grow light.

Thx for correcting me. My bad. Should've said chaeto/pods grow IN my fuge I suppose. I think the OP understood what I was trying to convey.
No, I knew exactly what you meant. My point was that you can grow pods/chaeto ANYWHERE. It's not this fuge, or any fuge for that matter. You parameters and stability need to be good. ;)

I got two HoB DIY, One is a Fluval HOB filter 100 I had laying around and the other is a HOB breeding that uses air to lift water from DT into it the natural flies back in DT. I’ve got Pods, mini brittle stars, chaeto, and many other things/uses. I’ll attach a better pic

I tried a HOB refugium on a small sump for a while and didn't care for the results. I was using a Kessil TunaFlora 80. Decided to go with a larger tank and sump. Sold the HOB refugium, but kept the Kessil. Agree with above comments that pods can grow anywhere, you don't need to rely upon a refugium. As for nitrates, water changes and manage the amount of food introduced to the tank. My .02 and your mileage may vary! ;-)
