I filled this 10ml syringe that I got from my Red Sea test kit up to the 1st black line to the 10ml mark. The 1st picture shows the line which I perfectly matched to the 10ml mark with tank water. I filled it all to the Hannah vial and It overfilled the 10ml mark on the Hannah vial.

what gives?

@Randy Holmes-Farley (tagging because I posted in general tank section)

Yep been Ike that forever, either use the vial mark or syringe exclusively.

I've used cheap amazon bulk syringes, and an actual syringe used for medical purposes(would assume it's pretty precise for human dosing?), and all fill above the 10ml mark.

Forgot to mention.....

I have a friend who works in the biology field, he let me borrow one of their expensive auto pipettes that measure 10ml exactly. Even that filled over the line on the cuvette

I won’t even waste my time testing the fill line in another syringe. I believe Hannah just messed up the fill line which is really shocking to me. I would assume they would know exactly how many ml. Or maybe Hannah needs only 9.5 ml and they just rounded the number for beginner convenience.

I would assume with our hobby grade test kits, close enough is good enough.

Heck even hanna has stated about the ULR phosphorus checker that they add more reagent then what is needed in the little packets. So getting all the regent in there isn't a huge concern.

Very very common issue with the Hanna stuff. That is why so many recommend getting a pipette that is adjustable. It will make testing of everything 100x easier. I would be totally happy if BRS brought one in house. I would rather give them $50 than Amazon

I wouldn't trust a cheap bulk purchase syringe that Red Sea throw into their kits, tbh most Red Sea stuff is ok, just not great. Plus you have to be careful how you actually fill that syringe some you don't include the rubber in the measurement some you go to the top of the wall of the rubber and some you go to the point on the rubber... Depends on the make, etc. A cheap syringe is far from an accurate one, there are expensive ones that you can use to confirm where the most accurate measurement is. But ultimately it comes down to consistency of how the test is performed and the repeated nature of that

The new vile with the Nitrate HR is different from the old ones.

I took this pic the other day

Left is Old Vile from my PO4 ULR checker using a Salifert 5ml syringe

Middle is Old Vile from PO4 ULR checker using a pipette set to 10 ML

Right is new vile from Nitrate HR using pipette set to 10ML

The new viles will show that the water line is about the mark on the vile, but the meniscus sits right at the 10ml mark.

Its hard to capture on photo, but its dead on 10ML

Yep, well known issue with the Hanna cuvette. Just use a syringe and you'll be a happy camper...

The best way to perfectly measure 10ml is to use a highly accurate scale and measure exactly 10g of RO/DI water. That's exactly 10ml. I routinely calibrate my pipette using this method and one can use the same to see where the line is on the Hanna vials.
I've discovered the same as OP. It's a little above the line...

Are you serious??? They couldn’t just switch the design of their packaging instead? I obsessively worry about every grain of reagent to go inside the vial. I honestly think I’m trying wayyyyyy too hard for this hobby. I keep thinking I’m in a science lab and everything must be precise and perfect by the gram…not even the manufacturers are being precise.
