I set up my 180 and I bought a finnex 500w heater. It's controlled by my apex temp stays at 78° the heater has been in use for 2 months. I went to check my skimmer cup and happen to look at my heater and the plastic guard that came on the heater melted. Sent an email to the company no response yet. Do you think it would be fine if I took the guard off and used the heater I tested it in a bucket with my temp prob and it works just fine.

I'm new to the hobby but my thoughts would be you've got plastics breaking down in the system which cant be good. Can you be sure to get it all off the probe? I'm not sure. Whether it was on outside the water or overheated, something went wrong and I wouldn't trust it myself.

I use Finnex heaters and have had calcium build up between the heater and plastic shield which then started to fall apart. I removed the shield and its been working fine. I think the shield is to keep livestock from getting burned.
