what simple heater do you guys recommend my 100w heater is cranked to 84 in a 30 gallon tank and had been doing great set at 78 i can not get higher than 72 now and my clowns and hugging the heater help me i need to know what new one to order!!!! no fancy controllers or wifi just set it and forget it please any recommendations!!!

is 72-73 okay for clowns why are they hugging the heater?

Ideal would be around 75-78 for reef tanks also depending on the inhabitants.

Anything below 68 is hugging the stress zone, but again depends on inhabitants, some need colder.

Ive had power failures and temps hitting 66-68 and everything was ok, again that temp was for a few hours not days.

Temp swings are worse I believe, sudden change in temps, if its over a few hours thats fine.

How are you measuring the temperature? I'd be splitting the wattage between a couple of heaters personally. I've got 2 primary digital heaters on a controller and an emergency heater as a stand alone backup, in a 60 gallon, for example.

Personally I would add an eheim heater and an inkbird, this combo has worked well for me over the years.

Do you want the temp to reach 84? Turning a heater up past the desired set point does not make it work harder -- it simply makes the shutoff temp higher.

A temporary fix to the temp issue would be to increase the temp in the room. Then, add another heater -- if you were happy with the brand/model you were using, just get another one of those and run both. If the thermostat on your heater is working (and if it is making heat), the problem is simply that it isn't a high enough wattage.

The clowns may be hugging the heater for reasons other than temp. Mine hug a powerhead, and it is not for the flow, it is just the spot the little weirdos like. That's not to say that your current situation is good, of course.

cheap and heating are absolutely not what you want to do. Spend the xtra money for that purpose and get a quality heater on a controller. I use brs on an inkbird. There are even higher end controllers but I like the bird.

I’ve only used Eheim Jaggers for years. Very reliable. Eventually get a INKBIRD controller when it’s on sale. They go on sale often. It’s always nice having that piece of mind.

Hygger makes a decent heater. Amazon has them for around $50.

This is one of the most reliable setups based on feedback from multiple hobbyists. You should also consider changing your heater every 12-18 months just to be be proactive about preventing any mishap due to heater failure.

I use the fluval T series heaters. Only heaters I would ever use now as I have never had a problem with them unlike other brands.

100 watts is 341 BTUS per hour. Your 30 gallon tank has maybe 25 gallons of water.

It takes 1 BTU to raise 1 pound of water 1 degree Fahrenheit. Your have ~200 pounds of water, so your heater should be able to raise the temperature of your tank by ~1.7 per hour.

But bigger question is what is your room temperature? If you can’t get past 72, is it even heating at all? Is your AC running and keeping your room at 65, do have snow indoors or something?
