How many people run heaters? House stays 71 in winter 74 in summer. Thinking doing away with heater one less fail. Or gonna put a ranco controller. Have a 150 reef and putting up a 60 gallon water box for high end sps.

I run a heater. In our climate in Oregon, if something were to happen to the house heating, it could get very cold indoors quickly.

Big fan of Finnex Titanium heater and Finnex controller.

Can you run it in your sump? Was looking at the 300 watt one . It says 80 to 100 gallons.

Yes I run heaters to maintain temp around 79-81 in summer. IMO running your reef in the mid to low seventies is too low.

Which chamber?
I have mine in the middle chamber between the filter sock chamber and the pump chamber. I don't run a skimmer. The middle chamber has cheato and sea lettuce, ceramic media in mesh bag, foam filters for my QT's HOB floating around with the heater.

I run three heaters on a Ranco 2 stage controller. I had this in use on my old system but no longer need the cooling stage on my current tank. I live in Florida and keep the house at a max temp of 80 in the summer and min temp of 68 in the winter. Given my location and current time of year it is not at all uncommon to run the heat in the night and AC during the day. Tank temps run 76-77 year round.

So two smaller ones plus a controller?

To be as safe as possible, and to mitigate risks as much as you can, I would do 2 smaller ones, each on its own controller. That way you have as much redundancy as possible.
