40-50g range doesn't need to break the bank one bit. When your corals outgrow it, none of your investment is a waste bc it becomes a perfect first frag tank. So yeah, if your end goal is a 40-50G tank that is the envy of the world, spend as you care to. If your end goal is something larger, then run this for 2-3 years. The lessons will be worth a lot more than 3yo equipment... whether it was top shelf or value brand.

Freshwater filter only or is it? Have you ever used an HOB filter on a saltwater tank?
