Hi! I'm Window, I'm 17, and I'm new to Reef2Reef and very new to reefing in general. My dad surprised me with a 20 gallon Waterbox cube (and some equipment) yesterday, after I had been wanting to start a tank for a while. Now that I've got this stuff, it's up to me to build and take care of the tank :D. Both of my parents have kept their own saltwater aquariums, so I'm not going in totally blind, just mostly ':). I've been doing research; however, I'm looking for any newbie advice or tips you're willing to give!
Not sure what I'm going to put in here, so any recommendations for that would be super cool! I know that clownfish are a classic choice, and I'm not against them; however, I want to learn about other species too. I'm also excited to choose a nice clean-up crew that are fun to look at (very interested in some kind of shrimp).
Thank you for reading, and I've (hopefully) attached a picture of my little tank for intrigue. I'll use this thread for updates soon! (Lid is a work in progress)

Hello!! Little update to this thread. I have all of the equipment to begin cycling and will be setting that up tomorrow. Today's task was to create the aquascape, and that's exactly what I did! :]

Super glued many a rock together and ended up with this masterpiece.

As a total newbie, I'm pretty happy with it! Made sure to include many well-lit shelves and hidey holes. Tomorrow I will post an image that's easier to see once it's inside the tank.

Exciting update tonight! We've got sand, rock, and water in the tank. Currently, it's being heated up to 77 (didn't have a good way to do that before adding water, will be fixed soon), then all the fun cycling begins!

Testing will start tomorrow as I somehow overlooked ordering them (oops!). All good though, I have a nice local shop to get some from.

I think the aquascape in the tank looks really good! Hopefully it works well for my finned friends :D.
Here it is normally.

Then I turned the lights on to snap a cool picture.

Just some bubbles to clear up, but I'm not worried about them tonight, water is super clear!

Congrats to your awesome new hobby and your cool Dad!!!

My Son is 17yrs old. And because of that~~. I’m rooting for you!!! <><

But idk, focus on your school? ^^;

This hobby can take up lots of time and it can be stressful. Get good teacher and follow them. There are lots of noises out here and wrong advice and much more that can confuse you~. Good luck :). Great start!!!

Thank you! Funny you should mention school, I'm working on my AP Biology summer homework right now :]. My little homework station is just beside where my tank is, so I can watch it in the future!
