I am a one year reefer (and forum lurker) checking in. I got an off the shelf 55 gallon combo kit as a gift last year. I hadn't touched an aquarium in years, since I was a kid. Went to the fish store to pick out some fancy goldfish, saw the LPS display tank, had no idea what I was looking at but had to have it. Many, many dollars and curse words later, I have a reef!

This first year was all about experimentation, learning the basics, and doing things as cheaply as possible. The 55 is tempered glass so I don't have a sump, and have learned a lot about "alternative filtration." I've since added a Waterbox 10 AIO which is going through the uglies. Excited to go into year 2 now that I know (kind of) what I'm doing.

Welcome! Glad you joined. Tempered glass had me recently swap out my tank for another I found used so I could have sump, though as you've found sumps are optional. With tank as a gift, its not like you can give your gift away LOL!

Have you considered starting your build thread? I found its a great place to document my tank's evolution for myself. I started tank first then joined, so I'm still finding myself going back collecting pictures & updating historically as well as current state. Once you create your first post in your thread and link it to your account, they will give you build badge (look left, under my ID). You might even consider doing thread for each tank (entirely up to you), but they will only give you one badge. Build threads can be created in Forum > Member Aquariums.

This might help you find people local to you in Cincinnati:

This is a good reference book type online article I still review:
