That's new to me.
Maybe a form of molting but I had many and never seen this.
How long did you had it and any new additions to the tank?

I did a little research. Seems to be a cleaner shrimp disease. If the next molt or molt after does not clear it up. It is pretty much a goner from what other forums were saying.
Black spot disease.
I had a tank crack a month ago. So I am not shocked at any losses. For the most part the fish, GHA, and corals are doing great. Lost a maxima and sea hare 2 weeks ago.
Only new additions are a tail spotted blenny, emerald crab, blueberry gorgonian, a bottle of copepods, and a frogspawn.

Could it be stings from something - anemone? I would wait for the next molt and see what happens.

From what I am finding, not good link

From what I am reading,
It is a disease in there really is no answer to the cause of the spots. Sometimes molting takes care of the spots in the disappear.

One other thing I read was high Iodine also causes the spots.

Definitely no anemones.
The thing is I was waiting to see if the tank got hit with a mini cycle. With some fast action and good decisions. I managed to do a whole tank transfer in 3 days and after month no sign of it. Now I am going to go back to weekly water changes. Should have one done by the end of the day. Probably do another in 3 or 4 days. Get back on schedule with the weekly.
Poor water quality might be the reason. The nitrates I am sure are not over 5ppm. Phosphates are at .045.

If the shrimp acts normally and eats normally he is ok.

It's a fungus that will go away on next molt or couple molts

In mine it was at first molt that the black stuff disappeared

Good to hear there is a chance for Skunky. He is doing okay. I also have a peppermint and fire shrimp. They hide more so I can not tell if they have been affected. I did a 15g water change to spark a molt hopefully. Going to do another in 3 days like I said and get back into my weekly water change schedule. The water was pretty tinted today when I was dumping it out. So I am going to get that back to crystal clear. Diatoms is in the picture now. Using phosguard to help with the GHA, phosphates, silicates, and diatoms. My blueberry gorgonian was looking so beautiful today after the water change and a small feeding.

After seeing the fire shrimp the other day walking funny. Did a 15g water change. Which ended up getting him to molt and the emerald crap. Looked at the molt and the fire shrimp has it too. He is clean of the spots visually right now, but still walking a little tipsy like he had a few adult beverages.

They are tinny pets but we get attached to them

But we need to move on and keep taking care of the ones we still keep

My cleaner shrimp usually gets little more quiet after his molts

And sometimes "walks" more dizzy so it might be normal with your fire shrimp
But I can't help much I have Never had one
