Does it have little bubbles on the end of "snot"? If so, could be dinoflagellates.

Wow. Crazy fast.

Are you using tap water?

Do you own a canister filter?
You may need to buy one to fix this. A cheap one will work. Or a large reactor that is easy to clean.

You will need to use filter floss only and scrub the tank. Let the canister pull out as much as possible and change the filter sock a lot too

Run activated carbon in the canister or reactor or in a bag on the return pump.

You will need to do water changes with good clean water after the scrub.

A UV filter may be helpful too.

I use RO/DI water. RO/DI unit from BRS.
I just do a water change last night.
I do have a UV filter

These two threads have a lot of good information in them.
This post is how to eradicate them. Keep in mind, this route will cause cyano. If your tank hasn't seen cyano yet, this is a step in the right direction. This also includes a three day blackout.

The most effective route and sure fire way to getting rid of chrysos is to have GFO, toothbrush, and a canister filter(is best option). If you don't have a canister filter, switching filter socks or floss, can work too.
Also keep in mind that after adding GFO and midway through 24 hours, you need to check alkalinity. You'll be adding full amount of GFO for recommended tank size and alkalinity will drop a little more than normal. Remember and record times to test dkh before and during GFO.

Day 1
  • First thing, scrub rocks with a toothbrush while filtering with canister or floss. Remember to check floss or sock for clogging. Make sure you get as much out as possible. Wait till tank clears.
  • Perform black out. (ie: cardboard, trashbags, no light, etc)
  • Add recommended amount of GFO for tank size to overflow or reactor. Start 24 hour timer.
Day 2
  • First thing, check alkalinity if you haven't.
  • Prepare to turn GFO off.
Day 3
  • Or 72 hours later, remove black out procedures.
  • Slowly acclimate the lighting back to normal to reduce stress.
  • Your snails should start eating what's left.
This route is what worked for me with coral in the tank.

Once chrysos are gone, manually removing the cyano is the best route. Avoid continuing bio-pellets, bio-media(matrix,marinepure), carbon dosing, or gfo at this stage.

Great shouldn't be a serious issue then. Just follow the steps and in 3 days you willl see a 90-95% reduction. With a clean up crew it should be 100% gone in 4 to 5 days. Good luck!

@X.M.Chen

Excellent advice so far.

If you don't mind, I still have questions! :)

Can you post a recent, complete set of test results from your system, including s.g.?

Can you describe what led up to this chrysophyte takeover? Or has it been a complete surprise?

You mentioned cyano – same question. Can you describe what led up to it, or was it a surprise?

Do you have a microscope to get a look at it up close?
