Could someone help me identify this coral? I got it as a freebee from a LFS.

Thanks

It’s a “hairy” or “frilly” mushroom (same thing, different names). Soft coral, not an LPS. They’re bomb proof and grow fast. I have a softball sized rock covered in them that I started my tank’s cycle with. I frag them and give them away.

Appreciated. I have it on the bottom. is there a better place for it?
It'll grow anywhere. It's not GSP bad, but it can spread quickly, so keeping it on the bottom isolated from other rock like you have it can help slow/prevent the spread. But I've actually had it attach to and grow on my substrate (which is similar in grain size to yours). If you're running an all-in-one tank, the back wall isn't a bad spot either.
