I just want to add that I've usually been the type to happily buy Chinese knock-offs, DIY, Amazon, Home Depot as much as possible in the past due to being on a limited (read:small) budget. I've actually been pretty successful not ever having a tank crash etc.

Recently, after getting a new job with much higher pay, I thought I'd finally buy some name brand stuff and support a popular online vendor and manufacturer. I bought an IceCap Gyre 3k from them and guess what: the thing was defective straight out of the box!!! Made a super loud whining noise at any power setting. Then I get the run-around from the vendor, then the manufacturer, they want me to jump through a dozen hoops, doing everything they can to NOT give me a refund and return the defective product. Then they have the nerve to charge me a restock fee for a defective item after much stress and back and forth.

The point is, price and name brands don't mean jack **** and my experience and the many documented threads on this forum of people with defective expensive name brand products back that up. The hobby is packed with overpriced, often defective, junk on all sides. Price has no correlation with quality in many cases. Also, equipment has little do with a successful reef tank. The things are only tools and they have to be backed up with knowledge and consistent maintenance/care.

Haha,
This is good.....;Happy
Reefing is as cheap or expensive as what you make it...;Greedy;Greedy;Greedy
Can be done very cheap or very expensive, just depends on the knowledge.
Many of my friends over the years have done reef tanks without spending a fraction of the 6k that I did for the initial set up.
Heck I bet I'm up to about 10k now and I'm only 9 months or so into mine now, while they may have been around $500 total :)

To each his own, I say, I don't care if they are good stewards of their livestock or not.
Far be it for me, to form a negative opinion about anyone who wants to experience a small part of gods creation in their home or office under any circumstance.

Hint. If you are going to respond to a thread? Do yourself a favor and read the whole thread. This goes for any thread. Not just this one. You may find some useful info out there. If you respond to one thing you have read in a thread you are showing your ignorance and laziness.

I give my lfs all my used stuff. He tries his best to give these things to people who want to keep a tank but do not have a large amount of disposable income.

I’d be totally willing to help someone out who doesn’t have tons of money but truly enjoys the hobby... mainly cause it would give me someone to geek out with over it. ☺️ But I also teach college and am acutely aware that everyone is in a different stage in life. Varietion in ideas and experimenting can only improve knowledge. Even if it’s a failure, at least we know what NOT to do.

Why? Because people are voicing opposing opinions.... where's your tank pics at?
No. Because I'm the one under attack because I started this thread. People have agreed with me and not a soul has responded to them. And please pray tell what my tank pics have anything to do with this thread?????

So people who disagree with you are attacking? Lol. You posted that you'd show your tank if others did right? Show off what the best of the best can do! Here, I'll help you, this is our reef. Not the best of equipment so I hope I don't disappoint.

I think people just like to see each other's tanks and setups. I don't think there's anything wrong with having a different perspective. Everyone has a slightly different vantage point. :)

Maybe I didn't explain it real well in the first post??? I'm an sps guy and that's where I'm seeing people try on the cheap. I have an sps dominated tank. Yes you can run lps tanks with lesser equipment. To me sps is the ultimate challenge.

Let's see. I love seeing nice tanks. I believe a mixed reef is more challenging but just my opinion;)

I'll post a pic tomorrow. This tablet takes horrible pics. And the lights are off right now. I use my tablet for all this instead of my phone. I have to take pics with the phone, wait for them to upload, save them to the tablet. It's a process. BTW I do have a few lps in with my sps.

Yay! Can't wait to see it! This person is bad at taking pictures. :) I haven't figured out how to take a picture of my tank so that it looks as good as it does in real life.

I'll be uploading one with my moonlights on soon. It's almost full moon. You need a filter for your phone. Polyp labs makes a good one.
