So me and my wife are discussing how many aquariums I actually have and we are at an impasse. I currently have a 55 gal dt, a 20 gal frag tank and a 30 gallon freshwater aquarium. The 55 and 20 are plumbed to a 30 gallon sump. I am also using a 20 gallon as a top off container. She first said that I have 5 aquariums, counting the sump and top off as aquariums. I tell her that I only have 3. The top off tank doesn't count and the sump is a filter for the 55 and 20. She gave me the top off but says the sump is an aquarium because it has living creatures in it. She told me to post the question and she would agree with whatever the consensus was. So, is the sump considered an aquarium or am I right about it just being a filter system no different than say a hob filter? HELP!!

Is the sump used as a display or hidden in the stand/fishroom/basement? If it is not used as a display then I would say it's no, you have 2 systems (don't even count the # of aquariums) ;)
The only way I would consider a sump an "aquarium" is if it was showcased as a display sump

Its actually behind the dt. You can only see it if you go around to the back of the dt which most people don't. I did it that way because I have the room and it's easier to get to all the equipment. The tank is actually a room divider.

Still doesn't count! haha. If it was in the stand and the stand didn't have the doors I'd say she might have an case, but you still win. Get yourself another tank!

Sump dont count. Lol honestly I dont count my frag tank as a separate aquarium either bc it's part of a single system. So I say you only have 2...

It sounds like a classic situation of if you lose you lose and if you win you lose so I suggest...

Thanks for all the responses! My wife cracked up at some of the responses, especially this one! I have a new 120 that I'm currently building a stand for and planning to set up soon. I was intending to keep both the 55 and the 120 but it gets a little difficult at times with work and life and I would rather have one nice tank than 2 ok maintained tanks. Most likely it will be just the 120.
