This is exactly what I had in mind to try, thanks.

I’m never doing dry rocks again or bio pellets route again. Dry Rocks sent me down the additive route and it’s driving me crazy. Bio Pellets are too dang effective

For my new tank I actually opted for dry rock and dry sand. That way I could control/seed the system without bringing in unknowns.

I think it's ok to continue to use bleach on your machine washed filter socks, just extra rinse then soak in RO with a capful of prime.
