I have just brought home live rock with some mushroom coral e.c.t on its been left out for about half hour while I've been mixing water with salt e.c.t the water is still freezing while it is still waterming up, haven't even put sand in yet, I thought I better put live rock in before coral on it dies, even though water cold and salt still at bottom of tank, did I do the right thing or should I have left it out for longer? The wave maker and pumps and heater all on in tank just warmin up now!???

I would have left it out and put a damp cloth, or newspaper, over it to keep them wet temporarily until the water warmed up. It worked for me in the past

You just mixed the water and set it to heat up? You need to wait 24hrs and check gravity. If you put that rock in there with a fresh mix consider it a dead burn victim.

Why not go buy a gallon of sea water from your LFS and put it in there? I might be too late on this..

You were too late, I got told by my lfs it's okay to put straight in there, they seem fine at the moment. Hoping they stay like that! Temperature is on 20c at the moment not too low, water has cleared testing it all tomorrow seeing if I need to add any more salt.

Waiting 24 hours isn't necessary for water changes, although setting up a tank I might be more inclined to wait that long considering the large water volume.

Luckily those corals are pretty resilient and may make it through. They can however stay out of water for extended periods of time so in the future I would cover with a damp paper towel or newspaper (damp with saltwater) while they are out of the water. Good luck and welcome to reefing!

Thanks guys! I just got home from work and one if my mushrooms had detached. Itself and curled up, I take it it was dead? I removed it and it disintegrated? Then when I put what's left in a bucket it went almost to liquid, any help on this? Also my hydrometer isn't working it is stuck on the bottom number why is this?!

I thought it had died! I took it out the tank, you really can tell I am a beginner in this hobby. Won't be doing that again!

Oh right haha, whoops, what coursed the coral to 'melt'? I guess alot seeing as I've just put tap de chlorinator in today and salt, starting up the whole tank today! Thanks It did say on the packet to let it settle in salt water for a while I didn't realise it mattered alot!
