I need a better pic to tell what's going on. Appears to be tissue recession based on color, but pic is to blurry to tell.

What kind of light do you have? Did you make any light changes recently?

Birdsnest are usually one of the first SPS to shows signs of an swing in dkh. People refer to them as the canary corals of the SPS world.
Interesting. That's the first time I've heard that before.

I have one Hydra 52, no changes lately. I don't think its lighting. I had to pull that piece off the rock out was on, i hope i didn't expose it, i didnt think i did.

I respect your hunch on this only you can really tell what the system is telling you.

That being said, LED lights are notorious for poor light dispersion and as a consequence white belly bottoms. Hence my pointer. If you recently moved it say from the center of the light towards the side of your tank I wouldn't be surprised if it's not getting enough dispersed light to cover the coral all around. I have had a similar problem before.

That is exactly what i think is happening.

If you do have an incline to subscribe to that theory what i would do next to verify it is to move the frag on a low part of the tank but center with the light. Or maybe back to its original place. Give it a week or two and observe for changes. If it is light starvation it will come back.

Btw, how long of a tank you have and how many hydras?

I would say it's the mixture of the two shading and fluctuation in your KH, also I found this quite common with this particular type of coral I myself had one that went white on the underside and put it down to shading but didn't have the white at the base which is usually caused by fluctuation in KH.

May just be from it being moved but that birdsnest looks pretty haggard, another sign of swinging dkh. I'm putting my money on that. I too run LED and have large colonies of SPS without this problem.

It's not a blanket statement that all led will do that. But it's quite common when not enough coverage is provided, or the lens mixture you might have and so forth.

I am voting for the Alk being off. My alk had gotten pretty low and my corals where bleaching/dying off due to my reagent giving me the wrong test result. With the wrong results I also adjusted my dosing of Ca Mg and other elements down. Now that my alk is back up to 8.5 ish my birds nest are coming back really well, and my system is absorbing the elements like it used too before.

Also last week I adjust my whites down on my Hydra 26 hd's and I am also see in one week color coming back. I guess the LED's were to much for the arco's and burning them up;)
