Hello all, looking for some advice on connecting my RODI into the cold water inlet for my water heater. I’ve attached some pictures and a sketch of what I was thinking. Would this all work, or do I need to look for a different way?

That looks doable. Do you have hammering issues? Because you have an expansion tank on your water heater and anti- hammer on the in/out pipes. Also that is the cold in correct? It looks like you have a tap for an ice maker on your hot? What you drew will work if that is the cold. Just put a valve on it.

Not really sure what the tap on the hot side is for, as this is nowhere near the kitchen.
Hmmm, it must go somewhere. Can you trace it? Do you have another single faucet somewhere? Oh, could be dishwasher?
Hammering sounds like someone hitting the pipes. But it's really expansion when heating/cooling.
You can also just unscrew the water pipe and add the tee and shutoff valve.
Wouldn’t think it is the dishwasher B/C the line is too small. As a thought it might go to the furnace for a humidifier. Why you would use hot I wouldn’t know…

The line is the size for a dishwasher.
Dishwashers only use a little bit of water and then recycle it as it does the wash. So it doesn't use a lot.

Huh. I've never had one on a hot water tank. I've got one on my boiler system. I thought it would have been on the hot side, to work like on a boiler. Learn something new every day. But I also thought there was a different name for a anti hammer valve.....

Had that setup in old house and just added a saddle valve to a cold water line in basement. Saddle valve just clamps onto the line and when you screw in the valve it taps into the water line. Just like the one you already have but you will use plastic line for the RODI just like an icemaker connection. A few bucks at HD or Lowes.
It is strange so close to the water heater but it certainly does not have to be.
I'm just saying that it can be anywhere on the cold side.
Perhaps this was the only logical place to put it?

Yup I was agreeing. I Googled it after your post and you are correct. I had just never seen it on the cold side. My last house had one on the hot side just like that. I have no idea if it was right. I had to replace the hot water heater and I can't sweat copper pipes to save my life. I tried kept getting little leaks. I eventually called a plumber he didn't say anything about the expansion tank on the hot side just sweated the pipes took my money and was gone..lol This house doesn't have one except for on the boiler. So I guess my understanding of what it was for was not correct.
I was just worried that op might be tapping into the wrong pipe.
