Help with Zoanthids

lol josh i think me and my girl have the simplest set up known in the hobby.

i have a tank, Sump Reef octopus skimmer, 2little fishys reactor running Carbon, other running PhosBan, some chaeto, and a filterBag. no ATO or anything like that all elbow grease :O

and our daily dosing of CAL, ALK part A&B , sometimes MAG.

No controllers nothing fancy :( yet that is.


The shallow tank is even better :P

Dont really ever dose that tank its ZOA, ANemone domminated. 3 clowns, 1 blenny, 1 6Line and a cleaner ship and A CUC.

Guess what? I've currently got you beat XD
LR, HOB, sand, heater, light. That's it. Only three corals, though.

My new tank will have a sump, though :squee!:

Not looking for the "basic" answers that almost everyone blogs/posts about. I want to know more of the detailed answers.

sounds like you need some "hands-on", real world, working knowledge. thats how all the so called "masters", figured it out.

its basically, what I was trying to get at earlier. keep your tank stable, light it with quality lighting, have good flow, and feed. Just like any reef tank, meet the needs and the tank succeeds. I know you're looking for these "advanced" or complete solutions to keeping zoas, but I really dont think there is a "magic" answer/formula. Do what works best for you.

I personally have found that there is no secret to Zoas. Totally agree with pork in that ANY REEF tank needs stable parameters, 10% a week or 20% every 2 whichever is easier. Clean skimmer and done. If you wanna complicate things, like myself LOL, run kalkwasser to keep ph up, carbon to polish water, and gfo to control algae. As far as dosing nada, nothing, etc... water changes replenish everything zoas need.

The main reason I feel joshs tank looks so amazing is because he has collected all high end zoas. Thats the difference between his tank and most zoa dominated tanks like you mentioned with yours dylan. We have a local reefer that sells out of his house that has a 4' tank ful of "valtrexa zoas"....you look at his tank and there is that one plug that stands out in his entire tank (mind you he probably has atleast 1000 heads in there) and theyre the suny d's i gave him. Thats the difference between the run of the mill zoa and the $30-$100pp zoa imo.
