Maybe GHL can offer a coupon to those that pre-ordered the IonD and for PATIENTLY waiting... like 10% of the next order with free shipping.
Keep in mind that, like most companies at this time, GHL is likely to suffer financially from the effects of the current crisis.

GHL isn't going to fold if they don't get the iond out on time like the mindstream folks did, that's 2 different situations.

BTW not that I think GHL will fold but I don't make any assumptions about any company right now. I know one very big player in the Aquarium industry that borrowed a ton of money about eight months before covid. If news broke that they went under it would not be a surprise to me but your Jaw would probably hit the ground.

We should be patient. It is reasonable to expect some delay. The KH Director suffered some delay too when it came out, and there was not such a terrible thing like COVID-19 affecting all of us.

I think everyone is being patient @chema - the last update was 01 April saying that it was hoped that they should be ok for 15 May and I think all that is being asked is an update to say if it's still on track to start delivery in less than two weeks.

The delay is perfectly understandable and it is also perfectly reasonable to ask for an update.

Got an email this morning...

Sorry, the ION Director will be a little delayed

... but it will be even better!
We would like to inform you about the current situation regarding the delivery of the ION Director. There are good news and not so good news.
Some time ago we informed you about the delayed delivery of the ION Director. The material procurement and logistics problems due to the Corona crisis had led to massive delays.
At that time, we assumed that the delivery could probably start in May 2020.
Unfortunately this is not possible. In the meantime, most of the electronic and mechanical raw materials could be procured and many components have already been produced, such as enclosures and mainboards.

However, at the moment an essential part, the multi-ion sensor, is the main reason for delay. Due to ongoing shortage of raw materials and delivery delays, they could only be produced for prototypes and pre-series devices. Although the available quantity of sensors is sufficient to equip the development team as well as our permanent test systems, several thousand sensors are still needed for the existing pre-orders alone. The production of the sensors is very time consuming, even after material availability, the production and testing takes several weeks. An acceleration of the manufacturing process is not possible without compromising quality and is thus out of the question.

But what are the good news, as mentioned at the beginning?
The past time was used intensively for numerous experiments and for testing new ideas. GHL always has the ambition to perfect products. Although the originally mentioned features and technical data of the ION Director had already set standards, the design could be improved even further.

What has become so much better now?
We are very proud to announce the following improvements:
  • Only 3 instead of 4 dosing pumps are needed for the measurement - the existing fourth pump of the GHL Doser can be used for any other purpose!
  • Halving the reference consumption and thereby reduction of the operating costs - instead of approx. 10 ml only approx. 5 ml are needed per measurement and reference!
  • No more aquarium water is consumed - the complete water sample can be returned to the aquarium!
  • The measurement is now super fast - currently less than 10 minutes are needed for the complete measurement process!
Fair enough - but when will it finally be delivered?
Since the aforementioned procurement problem already causes a delay anyway, we have decided to start right from the beginning with the latest and best design possible, even if this will delay the delivery even more.
In order to detect and eliminate all potential problems in advance - also with regard to the new design - extensive field tests are planned with our beta testers before delivery. In addition, a safety buffer for possible future procurement and logistics problems need to be considered.
Therefore we are unfortunately forced to postpone the market launch until autumn 2020.

That's a long time - what benefits can GHL offer the pre-orderers?
As a small thank you for your patience and support we will add 1l reference liquid A + B worth approx. 50€ to all currently pre-ordered ION Director (sets) free of charge. This also applies to orders placed via retailers.

But what if I do not want to wait any longer?
We would very much regret if you like to cancel now, but of course you are free to do so. If you wish to cancel, please contact your retailer or contact us if you ordered directly at GHL.

What disadvantages would I have if I cancel now and order again later, shortly before delivery starts?
The pre-order discount can no longer be granted for new orders, so it would be void.
Since the deliveries are made in the order of the orders, you would be supplied later in case of a new order.

I have not yet ordered, can I still do it now?
Yes, orders can be placed at any time. The time of the binding order determines when it is your turn for delivery.

We are aware that we are testing your patience. We apologize for this.

We ourselves can hardly wait for the product launch and look forward to providing you this revolutionary device that will take automation in aquatics to the next level.

Thank you very much for your support - Your GHL Team

Automated Ca, Mg, K, Na and NO3 testing made easy!

Achieve the next level of water testing automation with the ION Director (IOND). Through the use of ion-selective technology, the IOND automatically measures and controls Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, Sodium and Nitrate levels in saltwater aquariums.

Get a deeper understanding of your aquarium with the IOND. The ION Director can be used alone or together with a KH Director (KHD). Coupled with the KHD for Alkalinity monitoring and control, the IOND and KHD are the perfect tools for controlling your water parameters like never before.

Each parameter can be measured and automatically controlled. If one or more parameters are too low or too high, the IOND can automatically determine how much of an adjustment of attached dosing pumps is needed to maintain stable parameters.

One Multi-Ion sensor and no reagents

On going research and testing has allowed us to specially develop our own multi-ion sensor. No need for a dedicated sensor per parameter plus a reference electrode, no need for single reagents per parameter. Only one multi-ion sensor and reasonably priced reference fluids are required.

NOTE: Above photo shows ION Director without sensor installed. Details and photos of our multi-ion sensor will be unveiled very soon.

Ultimate accuracy and precision

As with many things in this hobby, stability is key. Through the use of four dosing pump heads, the IOND effectively performs measurements with lab-grade precision and accuracy, each and every time.
Out of the four pump heads, two are used to transport two separate reference fluids for automatic ion-sensor calibration. The use of these heads eliminate the need to manually calibrate the sensor. This ensures that each test is used with a freshly calibrated sensor, every time.

Pairs perfectly with the KH Director

Fully automate and control the aquarium's most important water parameters with the IOND and KHD.
Perfect integration into GHL Connect

ION Director confirmed details
  • Automated Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, Sodium and Nitrate testing and control
  • All tests performed with a GHL developed multi-ion sensor for superior precision and accuracy
  • Hardware is prepared for future parameter add-ons
  • Uses only 2 reference fluids for ALL current and future parameters
  • Cost effective reference fluids
  • Automatic sensor calibration before each measurement
  • Automatic data logging and charting
  • Works in conjunction with a 4 pump GHL Doser 2.1
  • Can be used alongside GHL Standalone Doser (no aquarium controller required) or with a ProfiLux 3 or 4 controller
  • ION Director / Doser 2.1 Slave and Standalone packages will be available
  • Controllable through GHL Connect (app, webserver and cloud) and more
Price for reference fluid

One of the goals in the development of the ION Director is to keep the cost per measurement as low as possible.
In cooperation with a German producer of chemicals, we have succeeded in developing a very precise yet cost-effective reference fluid: 1 litre of reference fluid will cost only 24.90 € (incl. German VAT, excl. shipping). Per measurement 2 reference fluids are needed, the quantity is maximum 10 ml per measurement.
This results in a maximum cost of 50 cents for a simultaneous measurement of Ca, Mg, K, Na and NO3. In contrast to solutions from other vendors, which require a minimum number of daily measurements, the IOND user determines the daily costs himself: The number of daily automatic measurements is adjustable between 0 (then only manual measurements) and 24.
We are currently working on further reducing the amount required - without compromising measurement accuracy - which will further reduce the cost per measurement.

When I saw the email saying it will be 'even better' I thought they were going to say that they've managed to include Phosphate.

It's a significant delay and rather disappointing.
Yup. Well I never got an email. U guys must be special. But when I read better I said phosphate. That would have been worth waiting till December. U want more news? Prob won't see it this year at all. Lol

This latest email does concern me enormously, autumn is a long way off and then 3 months long! It could well mean the first deliveries don’t start going out until 30 Nov, so it could be the new year before the preorders are fulfilled. There is just to much ambequity in these timings.... i think I may cut my losses on this now and get a refund...

No email either and I paid for mine in full, well that email sucked!!
Well it's time to do some thinking and come up with a new plan. I don't buy into the whole "Hold your space in the line idea". Very few people are going to leave a deposit hanging for one year in hopes that a product does come out. I am sure there will be plenty of Ion Directors available when they finally come to the market should I change my mind. It also weighs heavily on me that I will have no Credit Card recourse should this length of time pass.

You know the more I think about that statement about "holding your place in the line" and "losing your discount if you pull out" is the more upset I get!

GHL had everyone's money for five months and in that time they got to use that cash to purchase materials and pay staff etc. Now they are telling me to join the F* back of the line if I pull out my money and not even a thank you for the interest free five month loan!

What they should be doing is saying thank you for helping us to pay our bills and if you want your money back we understand and will let you get the unit at the already agreed on discounted price when we have the product available, since we are the ones that failed to deliver on our promised delivery date.
