Hi guys so my friend has a reef tank and has been in the hobby a while his starfish has randomly lost an arm doesn’t look to me unwell or anything like that it’s a Red Sea star is this normal behaviour of should they be worried? Water parameters are fine also

If your friend "randomly lost an arm" would you worry about how that came to be, or just presume that it happens sometimes and there is no need for concern or action?

Asking for a friend. :upside-down-face:

Hahaha I will let them know
Might consider moving the injured animal into the sump or away from what ever decided to eat it for lunch. These can regenerate an arm but not if something is eating them faster than they can regrow them.

Unfortunately, if this is a star from the Fromia genus, these are really not a good choice for most home aquaria, in my opinion. These are sand sifting stars that need a very large and mature sand bed, or they quickly deplete their food source, whither, and die in most aquaria.

Likewise, Live Aquaria notes:
"The Red Sea Star is very intolerant of sudden changes in oxygen levels, salinity and pH of the water, and cannot tolerate copper-based medications. The drip acclimation method is highly recommended for all Sea Stars due to their intolerability to changes in water chemistry. It should never be exposed to air while handling"

I think that's for the best. I'm sure your girlfriend - I mean, your friend's girlfriend - was very well meaning, but it's always a good idea to research any livestock you want to add. And don't rely just on what the guy at the LFS tells you, look here on R2R ;)
