Welcome to Reef2Reef!!! My advice would be to focus on being a water gardener first. If you get the water right, then the fish and corals are a whole lot easier.

I think this is an excellent philosophy! Have you had any challenges achieving or maintaining your water parameters when starting a new tank?

Very much so. I shut down my first couple of attempts at a saltwater tank due to setting myself up for failure and then not knowing what to do with the out-of-control pests (eg. algae, Aiptasia, etc.). I wasn't careful with salinity and didn't understand the importance of water tests because I was used to managing by look and feel in freshwater.
