Hey guys, I am currently planning placement for some corals in my tank. I wanted to know how high par do you guys have Gonies and torches in? I recently moved one torch closer to the top and I’m keeping an eye on it. I have some prime real estate that I really want to put some Acros on, but I promised myself I would not do acro in this tank, so I’m trying to fill the space with LPS. I look forward to your responses and pictures as well, please

Goniopora has a pretty high par range, I dont have a par meter but mine is a few inches below where my montipora is across the tank. I keep mine in moderate indirect flow pretty much under my return nozzle. Id watch the tidal gardens video on goniopora, good par info there.

Only goni ive seen tolerate above 100 par is the straight red one. You might be able to acclimate them but the risk doesn’t seem worth it to me? If your not doing acros why have your par so high

The spots I’m talking about are literally the top 1/4 of the tank, the par there will be higher in order to have a decent par at the bottom of the tank, I may end up adding some sticks but realy would like to put some lps in those spots. What about torches? Anyone blasting some torches?

Definitely seen some torches get blasted, need to acclimate them but certain ones can handle it for sure.

Moderate par for torches but 150-200 par seems to be a sweet spot in my tank. As mentioned they can be slowly acclimated to higher par. I think Tidal Gardens website has excellent information on specific coral care, check it out.

My euphyllia... torches, hammers and frogspawn are close to 300 PAR, my gonis get around 250.

@Troylee was blasting his torch with close to 500 PAR when he ran halides, it is still pretty close to that PAR since switching to Meridians. But, there is a difference in halide versus LED. This is NOT to start a debate.

I think a lot of the "recommended" PAR levels are to protect sellers from having customers that do not know their PAR or are new to the hobby complain about nuking corals. Also keep in mind, most LED fixtures have "peaked" spectrums that are not natural in any way shape or form, they are used to make corals "pop" since that seems like the trend these days. Having such "enhanced" spectrums are how people end up nuking corals. All corals can acclimate to higher lighting if the increase is slow.

Thank you, you as well! I wish I had the room to have as many as you, they are my favorite coral. Can’t wait for the Waterbox 150.4 that you ordered for me arrives, I’ll be playing catchup!

Not sure on a Goni but torches can take anything you throw at them! Ive had my 24k torch in close to 600 par and it shined like no tomorrow! It’s currently in about 260 because it outgrew its home and I had to move it.. it’s not as bright as it used to be but still growing extremely well. My other torches are in 400ish and loving life also.
