That tunze 9012 is not a HOB skimmer. It goes inside the tank.

Hang on the back overflows were popular for years. If you get one, you can have a sump.

I was suggesting a hang on the back overflow, which would allow you to run a sump. A sump gives you room for all your filtration.

If you have a good amount of rock in the tank, that is your biological filter. I would run two of these

That way you can just run carbon if needed and filter floss that can be cleaned- changed every 2-3 days. This filter is completely customizable and is way better than aqua clear, more room than tidal. Has a pull out container.

Every 2 weeks are so. It was used. I have carbon and some filter floss in it. It's not set up like the factory. Could this be the problem and do you recommend a new cannister with the proper set inside?

I think you might just need better export methods. Is it possible to for you to place a sump underneath?

It has a pre-filter canister that you can pull out of the main unit to clean more frequently without having to clean the whole thing. I usually clean the pre-filter sponges on mine once a week and clean the full canister every 2-3 weeks. I also like that it can contain the heater, keeping it out of my nano display.

What do you do for tds? I might get 40 gallons,maybe,before the di resin is bad. I use a separate cannister added to the stage filter system. Do you have a recommmendation of a whole house system that gets rid of tds,gard water and such?

On a closed loop system, you should run 2 filters, for flow and redundancy and only clean 1 at a time. I would recommend adding a Marineland Emperor or seachem Tidal. There are excellent hob skimmers out there

Nitrates of 80 are not the end of the world. I've tested water in the bag from my LFS and the Nitrates were 180, and the fish are fine.

It is better to get to the root cause of your nitrate issue, rather than complicate things by dosing a bottled solution.

The solution is faithful, weekly 20% water changes. Do that for a month and watch your nitrates come down.

If this doesn't solve the problem, then we will have to take a deeper dive into the cause.

Canister filters are nitrate factories. You MUST break them down and clean them weekly. They're horrible; I got rid of mine a long time ago.

I think the root cause of your issue is husbandry.

Consider adding a sump to your system. It makes maintenance much easier.
