Has anyone used this to keep nitrates down? Seems to be a problem.

Where are the Nitrates coming from? Can you fine tune the "input" of the Nitrates?

Water changes will reduce that number and is generally the go to practice.

I'm somewhat new.

No protein skimmer. It's a 180 gallon. Not drilled. If I get a hob, that will help?
A hob can help, but with a 180 gallon i would say it would be minimal, how big are the water changes?

40 gallons. Every 2 weeks.
I would say to just do more frequent water change but i might be wrong, Im sure one of the veteran reefers will have a better say at how to lower them better. my only advice would be if youre feeding a lot to try to lessen the load and get more CUC to clean up the uneaten food

So you mean you have no filtration on the tank at all? Just powrheads?

Hob filter by itself is not really sufficient for that size tank and won’t do much to help you. A skimmer or refugium would be better. Water change every 2 weeks won’t do much and for your size tank will just be expensive in salt. Even vodka dosing would be better than adding chemicals.

ten food
About the protien skimmer. I was looking at the tunze dc 9012 for a 180-gallon. That should do something for the nitrates?

I have only ever kept nanos and pico tanks so i unfortunately dont have a recommendation but ive heard bubble Magnus and red sea have decent large skimmers

Every 2 weeks are so. It was used. I have carbon and some filter floss in it. It's not set up like the factory. Could this be the problem and do you recommend a new cannister with the proper set inside?

Canister filter is the so-called ‘nitrate factory’ in the hobby. The filter pad will hold food that rots until it’s removed. This might be part of the problem (although every 2 weeks is not bad). You can try changing out the filter pad a little more often to see if that helps reduce nitrate.

Just wondering if i should buy a new one that's set up properly.
