High Vanadium

Hello, I have a new 120 gallon Red Sea Reef that's about a year old. I've been using the Reef Moonshiner method for two months. My Vanadium is escaladed 117.6 to a reference of 1.42

I have two questions:

1) How can I bring this down? I have done 2 10% water changes to no effect
2) Does High vanadium cause any damage? All corals are really look good and growing

1. Aside from continued water changes, I don't think there's any other way (other than your tank slowly depleting it).

Tracking down the source is the first step, IMO (assuming it is accurate).

Have you been adding any products containing it?

I just got my icp test and it said my vanadium was 5.565 and said that it was high. What causes the rise in this element

I doubt that level is any concern., even if ac curate.

Which company? The fact that it is presented as 4 significant figures when even one is probably pushing the limits of accuracy gives me concern about the quality of the company and its chemical knowledge.

It was an ICP test. It also said my CA, chlorine, sodium, bromine, chomium, iron, iodine, manganese and zinc was low. I thought my CA was on point with my Hanna checkers. Going to retest today. Started dosing CA again
I just got a MG hanna checker as I was using a salefert for it. Maybe I need to get some refills, outdated? My hannas have been flashing batteries before they flip over to start the test. They also said I had phosphates in my Rodi water and a whole lot of other stuff. What should I look for that causes an issue with my Rodi? They didn't highlight anything in the Rodi.

So basically, ICP tests can be off, just ball park figures if any. Thank you for the article. I'll judge by the look of the corals and if my Hanna is saying something is way off. Thanks again.

Yes, I think a rough guide is the way to think of them.

Vanadium is a low toxicity element, and i would not worry at all if it is below 25 µg/l, likely there is also no issues in the ~100 µg/l range, but id recommend to keep a "safety distance" to potentially problematic concentrations.

Typical sources in my experience are reef ceramics. Vanadium and even arsenic are the (unexpected) elements we often see released by ceramics.

If you want to lower the concentration GFO type media usually work. However they have significant influence on other trace elements (and of course also phosphate).

I also think it is unlikely that AFR adds problematic levels of vanadium,. And, of course, there's the accuracy concern mentioned above.

No, I don't think it's from all for reef I just think it is 8 months of no water changes though. I use fritz blue box salt, and RODI I had tested haven't gotten them back yet.

Seems like ATI and Triton are the biggest in the US, but I know Aquaforest does them as well. Not sure who else as I haven't searched a ton. Maybe alternating between 2-3 companies consistently as a "checks and balances" thing could be beneficial too, to get a more holistic picture.

I do not have much info to go on, but I will say that Christoph (Oceamo) knows what he is doing, while I do not know if other companies have similarly skilled personel.
