Exactly. Width of the brace lip, footprint of the brace after overhang.
Also don't get too caught up in making it PERFECT. 1/8th of an inch too much in width is fine, you just don't want to be not enough and cause the mount to have to rock forward over the brace to touch it.
If that is an area that stays dry, maybe a piece off of a cheap plastic or wooden cutting board would be where I would start. Stick with the plastic though if it will be wet.
I’ll take a pic of my setup tonight just for one more data point. Sounds like you are on the right track.
Crappy pic. Can’t really make out the washers I used to fill the gap as they are black and this is where my ATO comes into my display. (No sump) You can see how I notched the rim though.

I would tape or glue the shims in place too. I used 3M removable adhesive strips. I found that if I bump the light, the shims could come out and cause the light to fall. For me it was the back shim that wanted to fall out.
