How can hobbiests help LFS with fragging?

However, if you sell it for way cheaper than what it would be brand new,i dont have a problem with that

1 of my lfs's sells a used tank every now and then, but its like $200 for a drilled 150gal,with a canopy so its a good deal, they also had a used 60 gal corner tank(i think),drilled, for $90

Selling stuff as used,for a used price i think is fine

I think it is okay for a store to buy used stuff,but from craigs list?Thats not that pro.I mean if they are contacted by the seller,than I see no problem,but going out and just shopping kinda odd.

If a store bought a 100 gal setup for $100 off craiglist and brought it back to the store and cleaned it, and asked for $250 for it...i think thats wrong

Ive never known of a store do this,but that doesnt mean it hasnt happened before

Yes it is, but i dont think a used item should be marked up that much more than what it was paid for..that just my opinion tho

I guess you could say a used coral would be a coral that wasnt as healthy as it should be..idk

If i could get trabons Orange Apple Zoa for $40 but i knew the frag hasnt been doing the best, or i could get a perfectly healthy frag of it for $80....i would rather pay more and know my chances of it living are greatly increased

For some,but do you really think those prices will stick.My Miami is already hitting down into the $500 mark,used to be $2000,so prices are going to drop sooner or later.

I guess I am just saying people will pay what the market will allow. If you can double your investment on a tank than good for you. Just my opinion. :wink: I guess live goods and used equipment are like comparing apples to oranges. Sorry for the comparison.

Not really. Any owner of a fish store is most likely not in it for the money. How many LFS owners do you know that drive brand new BMWs or other high end car and live in $500,000 homes?

It isn't a business that is going to get you rich any time soon.

Most times its about making payroll and keeping some stock on the shelves.

But I still don't agree with jacking pricing up on used stuff from CL or even charging your standard price on something that was just given to the store because a person was getting out of the hobby. They should use those setups to sell on the cheap and get MORE people into the hobby.

I agree with ya'll that jacking up the price is not right. I don't know any LFS owners that drive a BMW and just "trying to make payroll" every week is exactly the point of why they do jack up the price. Selling stuff cheap just to get more people into they hobby doesn't pay the bills.

If they sell it cheap enough, it could be considered a loss leader for them. Getting more into the hobby means more potential buyers.

Good point :crossedlips: if they can just keep those people as customers. I find myself shopping much more online because of the selection and delivery directly to my door. I am spending very little money at my LFS now a days, especially since I found this forum. I plan to buy me next skimmer here, not there. So I guess they need all the new customers they can get.

Well being a legitimate buisness I would think you would have some ethics and purchase wholesale like the rest... Not search cracks list for a helpless person suffering for money and take of advantage of the customer and then quadruple the price in your store front for your local customers..... Not cool in my book...... But that's me..

So buying a complete system for 500.00 selling rock for 4.00 a lb say 100lbs for easy figures 400.00 lights 200.00 tank 200.00 skimmer 100.00 to me thats wrong! you made 900.00 off a 500 system. when someone else could of got a good deal and got it running but nope they are paying retail for it now.

I agree most business are in it to have the freedom (well thats what they think when they start a business anyways) most will not make you millions over the course of a year. some are lucky to brak even but I would be all over it If I bought a coral for 40 bucks from a wholesaler tagged it with a name and sold it for 400 and eye lol I would do the same thing why should I be left out of making all that money.... but like I said earlier you can put a ugly coral in a tank with so nso's name on it and it will make him and anyone that sales it alot of money. but I could have that same coral and it would be worthless just becasue it did not come from sonso's tank. that I will never understand. :neutral:

Well I have to disagree with anyone who says that there not in business to make money.... I do know a lfs owner who drives a high end car and does live in a 500,000$ home lol..... Now the guy does know his business and does know alot about the hobby granted..... Here is a funny example..."TRUE STORY" I just recently had a lfs store owner from the past stop by my house to pick up a sump on his way back east...moved put of state.... He saw my tank and was in shock and awe and had a millions questions like he never had a fish tank before.... Here is a guy who owned a store for a few years and really is a complete newb..... Tells me he was in it for the money...... Sure there not all in it for that but I know a few that are....:( and the whole craigslist reference I was talking live stock prices more than dry goods or equipment.... I know a dude that will buy everything forsale in your reefclub and throw it in his store for profit!!!!!!lol....;)
