How Dark Do You Let Purigen Get?

Seems like some people let it get dark as coffee. Advise is appreciated. Thanks to you all.

I found in reef tanks it doesn't nearly get as dark as the photo on the right. Especially with skimmers and so much exports, purigen usually just stays around the middle. Even if it doesn't change I'll try to refresh it once every 6 months
