Hello everyone. I have a bit of a stupid overall question. How do you feel about media reactors? I'd be primarily interested in your opinions regarding reactors dedicated to nutrient removal via a tumbled media.

In my own experience, I've run around the block considering a media reactor for my tank but I feel like there isn't a really good option for the temporary but repeated use my tank would require. On top of that, I don't have the option to add another piece of equipment into a stash or to justify keeping it in my sump section and leaving it sit or swapping out the media for something else. Thus, I'm curious if I'm alone in wondering if there are other options out there that might benefit temporary users of GFO and carbon, as well as whether or not you think another option might be necessary.

I'd like to hear what immediately comes to your minds when asked the overall question, but if I had to break it into parts they would be as follows.

1. Do you ever feel like your media reactor is overkill for your needs in price or function?
2. Do you think a temporary option that fits the niche between a media reactor and a media bag may be beneficial? Would you consider it necessary?

Any input is greatly appreciated. Please let me know if you would like any clarifications or have any questions.

Thanks!

I like these tiny units for occasional/as needed use. A small Maxi-jet power head on the end of some silicone tubing-- cut for the length you need, sort or long-- and you're all set. Even to just polish the water with filter floss.

Never

They are a mess to deal with. Toss it in a media bag, throw it out when done.

Pantyhose from the dollar store work just fine.
