Hey everyone!

We wanted to ask how you deal with really hot weather when it comes to your reef tanks. Here in Poland, we’ve had some seriously high temperatures lately, and keeping the tank temperature stable has definitely become more of a challenge. What works best for you when the heat really kicks in?

Summer heat can become a real challenge for a reef tank, especially when room temperatures stay high for several days in a row. As water temperature rises, oxygen levels can drop, while fish, corals, and other organisms may become increasingly stressed. Even if the temperature increase is gradual, prolonged overheating can affect coral health, fish behavior, and the overall stability of the system.

Luckily, there are a few simple things that can help.

One of the easiest options is increasing air movement across the water surface. Small aquarium fans can help lower the temperature through evaporation, especially when combined with good ventilation in the room. Just remember that increased evaporation also means you may need to top off more frequently, ideally with an ATO system. It can also help to reduce unnecessary heat sources. For tanks located in consistently warm rooms or areas with very hot summers, an aquarium chiller can provide much more stable temperature control. It is a bigger investment, but for some systems it can be the most reliable solution.

Most importantly, keep an eye on the temperature rather than waiting until livestock starts showing signs of stress. A reliable thermometer or temperature controller can give you time to react before the situation becomes a problem. During extreme heat, avoid making sudden temperature changes. Cooling the tank gradually is generally much safer than trying to drop the temperature quickly.

I use evaporative cooling and keep tank temperature below 77 degrees.

Water weighs 8.4 lbs/G. Each pound of water that evaporates causes 1000 BTU’s of cooling. Here in Texas, we use air conditioners even in the winter. A single tree of moderate size evaporates 100G/Day which is the equivalent of 840,000 BTU of cooling.

For my reef tank, I find that good surface agitation and a small fan make a big difference during hot weather. Evaporation helps keep the temperature down, but an ATO is important to maintain stable salinity. If temperatures stay high for several days, a chiller is the most reliable option. I also try to reduce heat from equipment and monitor the temperature closely to avoid sudden changes.
