How do you make a non-reef safe object reef safe

I'm playing around with ideas for a non-traditional aquascape. I want to put a sword or buddha or something in a reef tank. Hear me out. If I coated it in epoxy to seal it, then did a another layer of epoxy and dredged it in sand, would stuff grow on it?

Besides epoxy, what could seal it up?

Clear epoxy is the best way to go. There are some threads on here with similar topics. I'll see if I can search one up for you.
