How Long Does it Take Flame Angels to Pair?

I added both the angels in at the same time, larger one is around 3.5” and the smaller one is a little under 3”. I’m not confident enough to be able to differentiate between male and female but I’ve read that males can revert back to female so I’m hoping that’s what will eventually happen in the event that they are both male.

When first introduced to my DT I kept them in the same acclimation box with a divider for a few days. During that time there was no aggressive behavior that I witnessed and they pretty much left each other alone. After releasing them from the box they pretty much went their own ways and don’t pay each other much attention other than some infrequent chasing by the larger of the two. They are definitely aware of each other’s presence in the tank and swim by each other.

At this point it’s been close to three weeks in the tank and they aren’t trying to kill each other. Does anyone know how long it would take for a male to revert to female in the case that these are both male, and what kind of behaviors should I be on the lookout for to really know if they paired up or not?

Does anyone know how long it would take for a male to revert to female in the case that these are both male, and what kind of behaviors should I be on the lookout for to really know if they paired up or not?

If you have 2 dwarf angels that are ‘getting along’ with each other, what difference will it make if they are ‘mated’… are you hoping to raise their babies?

Well if I know that they’re paired I won’t have to worry that one day they might turn on each other and duke it out. Plus it’s just a nice thing to know whether or not they are because I can expect to see certain behaviors that I normally wouldn’t be able to.

Maybe not raise their babies but if they do spawn then who knows, maybe I can find a way to collect the eggs and send them over to biota to raise. I know they just started a program with the Waikiki Aquarium regarding this very thing

After looking into it i see that is correct.

There just isn’t too much that I was able to find in terms of behaviors to look out for akin to how a male clownfish would twitch its body to the female to signal submission

When I paired mine . I had a 5+ year old adult with elongated fins . I purchased a small under 2in fish that had rounded fins . I added the new one after being in 2month qt . I saw aggression after the addition. the older male chased the new one all over the tank . . After a day of what I believe of the older securing domination. He settled . The only other time I see chasing is not dominance but flaring of fins and showing his broadsides that leads to head to tail circling of each other leading up to a final swim to the top in releasing gametes . I def enjoy seeing them interact . No, I may not go thru the steps of rearing fry but I do value their mating behavior. Do I want to try that in the future ? Yes I do . I am looking to add a third flame juvenile in the future to see the new interaction. When time permits in the future I may try my hand at rearing .
