10-12 hours a day including ramp up/down is about the average.

I run a 12 hour photoperiod that ramps up and down for 3 hours (so 6 hours at full intensity - though my lights are constantly ramping up/down, so as soon as it reaches peak intensity, it slowly starts ramping down to the next scheduled intensity - so if the schedule is 50% at noon and then at 6pm it’s 35%, from noon to 6pm it slowly ramps down over 6 hours from 50% to 35%).

I run my two LED 90 by red sea for approx 14 hours total including moon phase and I have no probs. I also have a pretty stocked. 11 hours 100% then goes to moon phase for the rest of the duration. Good coral growth.

I run 3 x Kessil A360N for 13:00 with a 1 hour ramp up and a 30 minute ramp down, on a hybrid T5 set up with 4 x 54w 48" bulbs for 6 hours in the middle. Apex tables go from 0% to 75% peak Intensity, and 10% to 60% Color.

I believe the coral will close when they have enough light (although I’m unsure what how no dark period would effect the coral, doubt it would be good). Fish and invertebrates, from my observation, most certainly require at least partial darkness for multiple hours each day just as most other species.

I personally run my lights ramping up from 1 hour after sunrise to 1 hour after sunset every day year ‘round to simulate Florida sunlight with the offset to my wake/home hours and only a few hours of peak lighting. I do run a “moon” light level until about 8pm each night in the winter for viewing but most of the coral are “sleeping” so viewing is limited. The fish and inverts remain interactive during moonlight so it must be stimulating. It is good to read that others have similar schedules and observations.
Great question!
