I have four motorcycles from 70s-90s, five guitars, banjo, mandolin and I love malt whisky and beer. Then there's the model kits and jigsaws. And a bit of astronomy which is not a great hobby in the cloudy UK. But I still love my reef despite a catastrophe on Saturday which seems to have killed half the fish. And I'll be back!!!!
That’s the type of positivity we need!

Depends who's doing the asking:
Wife - not as much as I thought it would
Friend - never tracked it and was always bad at math anyway
Friend of friend/acquaintance - you can't put a price on happiness

It costs 97 dollars to run a 100 watt light bulb for a year . 100 watt main pump 50 watt skimmer pump 10 watt power head 30 watt wave maker. Not to mention 800 watt heater for120 gallon tank. That's 30 dollars a month just in electricity.

Not to mention Food Cost! Between LRS Reef Frenzy, Formula 1, Reef Plankton, TDO Chroma Boost, Reef Roids, Hikari Marine Carnivore etc....well over $100.00 in food alone.

Then we have additives to the tank like Reef Complete, Reef Carbonate, Reef Plus for $50.00

So add an additional $150/month to your tank cost ¡!

I just started trying to add everything up and I made it to $3,000 in just apex gear so I got scared and quit adding it up.

My official answer is I don’t know and I don’t want to know.
I stopped counting at 10 k (australian dollars) to save myself the pain.

Went to a really nice neiborhood to get a fish for my tank first time seeing a tank built on top of the sump . Sump was bigger than the tank . 4 compartments with a lid in front of the tank. Nice!!!!

Good God man how big is it!!!
Custom 84x30x24 with custom stand, sump and lid. Plus all of the gear, delivery, installation etc. More details are in my build thread if you’re interested in specific stuff. Not too many pictures in there at the moment but more to come once the actual tank arrives!

I spend way less in the hobby than I did 20 years ago when I bought into the lies about all the stuff you just had to have to have a successful reef tank.

Now I keep to the kiss method and amazingly everything does fantastic and my expenses are way less.

My old Red Sea 650 system was close to 30k. My current coffee table reef I’m proud to say has been under 1k

Holy smokes! My tank is smaller than yours, and my expenses are over triple what you’re at. $24K is a lot of moolah, but just know it could be worse. Still no fish in my tank, but the rate of drain on the bank account has fortunately slowed.
