High quality carbon, low number micron filter socks, and panel style lighting (such as reef brite, t5, and such).

Keep in mind that ultra clear water may not be ideal for your inhabitants, especially corals and filter feeders. A sterile and crystal water column is not what reef animals are used to living in.

I too stopped with filter socks. BRS Investigates determined that filter socks should be changed out every 3 days…….. not one, not 7 but every 3 days to have the best results when using filter socks. Not going to happen. So I stopped. My tank is perfectly clear.

I hear ya! It is the answer though. Just under $200 for Aqua UV 15 watt. Good luck.
For the cant afford it, ebay jeabo uv filter and you will find they are reasonably priced. Work just as well as other brands. If your worried about the possible black sludge some have reported, they do make a titanium version that runs a bit more but solves the sludge issue.

Yeah that could work. I think matrix carbon is one of the nicer one's out there from some old article by Dr Tim. Just make sure its rinsed thoroughly and does not tumble or grind against itself. I personally use a reactor for it to make sure I can pack it in place, but a tightly packed bag in high flow area (my sump has a great place for it) works too.

Try this .
Take a little water out and put in a white bucket .
does the water look like it has a yellow tinge ?

if so high quality carbon will fix it .
Also depends if the clarity of the water is suspended particles or just the colour of the water ?
