Lots of good advice here, including running an airline, putting kalk on a doser versus ATO, etc. I do believe in getting your pH up if you can - not sure if this is considered "chasing" or not - but if you are at 7.8, you will likely benefit from any increase (remember pH is a logarithmic scale, so even 0.1 increases are significant). You might also try switching your ALK additive (not sure what you are using, or if you are using something other than kalk) to sodium hydroxide. You have to be a little more careful mixing it up, but it is one of the easiest ways to get pH up in the 8.3 range reliably, repeatably, consistently for about the same cost or cheaper than most two-part ALK additives. I've been using sodium hydroxide on my 600g system for almost a year with great results. 283 grams sodium hydroxide per gallon is Randy's recipe for a straight ALK 2-part solution replacement.
