How to Remove This from My Clam?

Unfortunately it appears I have boergesenia forbesii growing on my clam. The clam is only about 3 inches long so I am worried that I may damage it if I try to remove the algae with a toothbrush. How delicate is the clam (maxima)? Whats the best way to remove the algae?

You are not going to hurt the clam by rubbing its shell. Just don't damage the foot.
