I’ve been lurking for a while without an account and decided to finally join, considering that I’ll probably be on here more and more from now on lol

Hi, I’m totally brand new to saltwater tanks and I am a newly hired aquatics specialist for Petco. I know the stigma with chain pet stores and I’ve seen how petco and petsmart are talked about on here lol. A lot of it is valid, but in the end, the treatment of the animals and knowledge of the employees varies wildly from store-to-store. As such, I try my very best to leave people with a good impression and stay up to date with animal care standards, as well as doing lots of research on my own time. Animal care was my interest far before I started working at petco and petsmart!

I have plenty of freshwater experience, almost a decade’s worth, but I went into this job knowing I was going to be responsible for maintaining the saltwater tanks with absolutely no experience or knowledge (I got poached from my old job to come to this one lol, they were desperate for an aquatics specialist with experience)

I’ve been working here for a couple months now and I’ve learned a lot very fast, because I treat the fish wall like they’re my own tanks and I care deeply for the fish we have in store. This has also sparked interest in reef tanks for me, and I’m now planning on getting my own tank in the near future! But for now, I’m just doing my best to ensure that the saltwater tanks are well maintained and the fish are happy and healthy. No one in my store has saltwater experience and my general manager was supposed to be helping and teaching me, but it’s very obvious I’m the one teaching him haha. The fish wall is almost entirely under my care, only two other coworkers tend to the tanks but they both follow my lead. So I feel very responsible for the success of these tanks lol and for the wellbeing of the livestock. I don’t care about sales, I’m just passionate about fish and I happen to make sales along the way.

Sorry for the long intro post! I don’t really have anyone to talk to about aquatics. Please be patient and understanding with me as I learn! Thank y’all, happy to be here!

Welcome to R2R! Yes, each store AND employee makes a big difference. I have looked in these stores many times, and tend to get my food there. But when it comes to buying live animals, I will admit I shy away due to what I see in the stores. But as you said it varies greatly. You will ove this site! Unlimited knowledge here for sure, and most people are very willing to help.
