Hydros Maven

At what point will the Maven be released?

It was released last month, but since everyone kept asking about it they didn’t tell anyone. They’re sold out now.

Just kidding, no clue. 🤪🤭

What I gather, from watching the various videos CoralVue has put out, there are a few of them out there floating around being tested in various versions. Not sure who has them, but I assume CoralVue employees since everyone is so tight lipped. They keep claiming that they aren't happy with the performance. What does that mean? I assume that it means they aren't working! 😄 Someday, hopefully we will see them...

This was talked about but after all this time no one other than these "testers" have seen a single case of one actually working. I think maybe the whole idea of it is smoke and mirrors at this point. I like a good story but this one stopped being believable a while ago. Sad really. Part of the reason I opted to sell all my HYDROS gear rather than hold onto it.

I mean the technology exists. There are testers out there already from other brands that work for all parameters and a lot of single parameters testers. They are not perfect but it’s not like it’s physically impossible to exist. It’s probably about finding a solution that works and can be reliable.

I think calibration over time is a concern likely and then if the results are relied on for dosing it can be dangerous if results become inaccurate. Like if they incorporate some form of dynamic dosing I would likely opt out of that as that could become an issue quickly.

At some point they may just cut their losses and cancel it altogether. The IRAD cost expenditures may never make it profitable.

Yeah, in the same boat I have been anxiously, patiently waiting to get my hands on one of these begging Carlos even to keep me in the loop if they need a beta tester and still no such luck.

most unfortunately. I know they got a lot on their plate with this thing and this isn't really a jab.

But I'm to the point where I'm spending so much on hanna reagents that I'm ready to look elsewhere.

Can anyone recommend another reliable auto tester for specifically phosphate and nitrate? not really concerned with anything else at the time. just those two.

The colorimetry chemistry is actually very simple and well known. None of these testers are doing anything novel at all. They are mixing well known reagents and shining a light through them to read absorbance.

The issues

1 - each parameter is a different reaction color.
2 - each parameter requires a different wavelength to test.
3 - some of the reagents are not oxygen stable for very long.
4 - quality (even mediocre) sampling cuvettes are expensive.
5 - no off-the-shelf cuvette is designed for “in cuvette” mixing.
6 - dosing of sample and reagent requires precision.

Each of these problems is solved by compromise to keep prices reasonable.

1 and 2 - This all has to be done in one cuvette. Therefore, RGB diodes are used as the illuminator and a color reader chip is used as the receiver. Accuracy and precision suffer because wavelengths are not ideal. Lab grade testers used fixed wavelength illuminators and precision photodiodes instead.

3 - Reagents start to degrade quickly (days, weeks) once opened. Air is drawn into the reservoir as reagent is used. Accuracy and precision suffer. Oxygen free reagent reservoirs (think bag Ina box) are expensive, so these machines don’t bother.

4 and 5 - These machines mix the sample in a cheap round glass cuvettes. Precision and accuracy suffer due to lensing. Trident uses a flat sided cuvette, but it is acrylic and stains and absorbs water, etc. in either case accuracy and precision suffer.

6 - quality steppers and drivers are expensive, 24 Bit ADCs and precision references and current sources are expensive. Reefbot uses a makeshift syringe pump with backlash, flex, etc and disposinle syringes. Neptune uses pinch valves. Some of these uses 12 bit ADCs, cheap or no references and or precision current sources, etc. Compromises in electronics and mechanics are needed to keep costs down. Accuracy and precision suffer.

So look at “Maven”. All of these compromises have to be incorporated. My take? They bit off more than they could chew at the price point and size format that they promised, if they want to deliver accuracy and precision.

I would be surprised if it ever comes to market at the price and size announced.

And even if it does line items 1 - 6 extremely well and affordable hobbyist will demand it perfectly match their Hanna, Nyos, Salifert, or ICP results.

Each of those systems has inherent issues as well.

1 - human error
2 - small sample volume amplifies error
3 - reagent qaulity control

I am building (no idea why) a precision phosphate tester. The custom cuvette and oxygen free reagent storage are the costly problems to solve.
