At some point last night my Tiger Goby (Jafar) learned 2 very valuable lessons. One, that he cannot fly. Two, that he needs water to live. Unfortunately for Jafar, he did not survive this important lesson. But his lesson is prompting a few questions from me. Can you help?

1. How the heck did he pull that off?
2. I have a lid on there. You can see a pic of the lid. Is this a terrible lid? Should I be using something else, or is this some kind of freak accident?
3. I guess I am in the market for another goby, suggestions?
4. Is this common? I mean of all the fish to jump out, a goby?

They can slip through any holes or gaps. Sometimes even through holes that are smaller than their bodies.

Did your goby have an established home/tunnel?

He did indeed. Only had him for a few weeks. However, when we first got him he made a home under the left side of the rocks and was tunneling it all out. He had a fairly good chunk tunneled out.

Sorry. I think it will happen to everyone at some point unless you have a solid sheet of plastic over top with zero holes.

The longer they have to settle in, the less likely they are to jump it seems. Mine never leave the bottom at this point.

Probably when out at the hob filter. I had a diamond goby do the same thing. That was the only gap. Found dried up on the lid the next morning.

My Randall’s goby disappeared after last Thursdays end of the day feeding. He was in front of his hole happily grabbing pellets that drifted by.

Friday morning he was no longer at his faithful post. Haven’t seen him since. I’m 95 percent sure he jumped.

Can’t find him though.

Gobys are known tank jumpers. It’s what they do in the wild. They will jump from tide pool to tide pool
