I recently made a post regarding both my montis losing a lot of color, and still couldn’t figure out why it was happening.
I didn’t even think about the fact that the same thing was also at the same time happening to my nem.
I went to the LFS I got the orange monti from and told the guy the situation, and we couldn’t figure it out… until he asked me how I dose my alk. It turns out that most likely all three of them (both montis and my BTA) have been getting burned by the cloud of seachem reef builder I’ve been pouring into the powerhead when I dose, which has been hitting them directly. I feel like such a tool for not even thinking about that.
As you can see in the pictures all the corals on the left side and middle section of my tank are fine (it’s close to lights out so they’re not fully open anymore) and on the right side (besides the chalice i recently added) everyone is all dull and dying. Even my Lobo at the bottom got hit by some of it and the corner is kind of burned away.

I know corals don’t feel in the same way people do but I still feel so bad for doing this to them :(
Is there any chance of full recovery for any/all of them?

Overtime they should recover, corals lose color when they expell symbiotic zooanthelle algae that live in their tissue. This algae can repopulate coral tissue pretty quickly, they should be looking better within a few weeks and by a few months they should be back to full color :)

Only time will tell but if you have stable parameters and the monti still has flesh im sure it will recover as stated above.

If I dose anything manually it always goes into the overflow so it can cycle through the sump before entering the main display. Unless its of course coral food then I hit my power head and let it disperse

Wait…so you’re telling me that pouring my dosing into my tank is a bad idea? I’m so confused. Can anyone expand on this more? I have a 75 hob, was doing AFR but just stopped and went back to seachem fuel because I’m seeing the EXACT SAME ISSUE, but I chalked it up to using RC salt along with AFR was overdoing my calcium. Only other thing I dose is vinegar 70 ml daily

He is stating pouring additives directly into the main display which blows directly onto corals negatively affects corals. The high concentration of alk will burn the flesh. Best practice to manually dose any additives directly into the overflow box so it can be dispersed through the sump before entering the main display

Yeah but what if all you have is a display tank? I got no sump, in tank refug and it’s all hob. Where should I pour? Into the filter?

In that case I would slowly drip/pour the additives into the hob filter, best case would be to dilute whatever your dosing with tank water prior as well so the concentration isnt so high before adding to the display

Depends on how much you dose.

But I would either pour into the filter, or grab a large volume of tank water, dilute it, and pour the mixture in

Thank you so much, is that the case with the nem too, hopefully?
