I was frustrated with algae covering all the rocks. When I decided to start over, I opted not to use sand on the bottom and introduced a light yellow tang (not sure of its specific name). This little fellow is excellent at cleaning microalgae, and my tank is now 'free' of GHA. What a relief! but.. he produces quite a bit of waste. Since there's no sand, I have to siphon it away regularly to keep the bottom clean. It's a bit of a hassle, but not too bad. anyone with same experience?

You could get a small wave maker or powerhead from Amazon and put it near the bottom to keep the detritus in the water column so it can be filtered out. That is actually an advantage of bare bottom reefs.
